Unhappy Ummmm.... Snobbery?

Well...

I'm unfortunately starting to recall an air of snobbery that I really disliked when I lived in MA as a teenager... & Parents killing themselves to dress their kids in overpriced clothing.
I remember very little cultural diversity in the public school I was in.. I'm caucasion, but still thought it was uptight... sigh* Small town life.

I may have to move closer to Boston eventually, or out again altogether. I wonder if Nashua New Hampshire is more laid back...

That's rotten. I don't want to think that.

Is this untrue? Because I so want to be wrong. I really love the land up there. Please let me be wrong. I hope things have evolved some.

It really depends on which town you grew up in. It's ridiculous to paint the entire state with a brush. I'm sure snobbery exists in every American city.

Hi Dee

Even though I don't live there yet.... I wanted to say 'hello'!
lucky for you as it sounds like you have a nice family that will be supportive of you, in my case, its just me and my 2 kids.
I am wanting to go back to school as i've been a 'mom' for many years and unfortunately, out of the job force as well, but, i'm keeping myself positive and believing that where there's a will there's a way!
no shame on public assistance either, its there for a reason and I for one having been born with a physical disability take pride in the resource's my country has

It's too bad you only remember people as snobs.

It's pretty snobby here in western Mass.

The schools in my town, Greenfield, are under-performing dropout factories, the mayor and her cronies are a joke, the fire department and police are threatening no response if they don't get more money, the only thing they're good at is incompetence. A college degree isn't a sign that you're educated and know something; it's a sign you're from somewhere else. Greenfield's a laughingstock, one fiasco after another.

Still, an awful lot of people go around with their noses in the air like they're better than you. Hard to figure.

I fully expected to get my a** handed to me for posting this. The fact that it got responses that weren't hostile is encouraging. Perhaps things have loosened up a bit.

Snobbery does exist everywhere, ChunkyMonkey... Speaking for my family... There's even a bit of snooty coming from my own relatives.
I do remember taking a lot of crap for wearing knockoff brands...
Fortunately, as an adult, I'm not worried about that sort of thing happening anymore. I am looking forward to making this experience better than the last.

crazyworld, I agree w/you 100% it is too bad.

willdufauve, too funny! Thanks for your sincere input. It's appreciated.

Samsoncat, hello! I wish you the very best of luck.. I agree with you about public assistance. I have not used it much myself, because I felt I could survive w/out it. I believe in public service, & that was one thing I could do to help folks like yourself out. There is a way if you've got the will! Stay strong! *hugs*

(I'm still figuring out the reps)

I don't notice snobbery. However, I grew up in Georgia where snobbery was just a part of the culture! If you've ever seen the new version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the little girl who chewed gum and her mother in matching designer track suits was very much the type of people I grew up with! Not to mention that when you're in high school, the rich kids are almost ALWAYS snobby with the "best" clothes regardless of where you live. If they weren't, we wouldn't have movies like Mean Girls and then where would society be? (in a much better place but that's another thread...)

I've heard of some snobbishness depending on where you live. My cousin swears up and down that people from Lexington look down on her because she lives in Bedford- so much so that she normally tells people she lives in Lexington! :P I don't get it and I certainly don't think that's representative of every town and every person.

charolastra00, that's interesting.. I honestly haven't traveled much down south. Not much of a hot weather girl.

You have a really good point there. That gives me something to chew on & to remind myself of. It's probably strange for anyone going home after leaving so young.
The 80's were odd to begin with... Definitely The Breakfast Club (-movie) type of memories.

Oh, & badluck... How could I have overlooked such an intellectual post!? I can go entirely on what you chose to name yourself & say a thing or two to you about glass houses.
