We are looking at living options in Mass.

Currently residing in CT and i'm from Austin, TX. My wife has an opportunity in Portsmouth, but would be open to jobs in Boston proper in the future if something was a match.

Where would you recommend buying property for a family with kids in Mass expecting a commute to Portsmouth everyday and also having the flexibility to take a train into Boston.

Portsmouth is beautiful. Why not live there?

Aren't the winters horrendous?

If I had a job lined up in Portsmouth already, I'd move there.

You'd have to live in far northeastern MA anyway, not a significant difference weatherwise. Im not sure theres any difference. COL would be extremely high here. Most people would give to be able to live and work in Portsmouth. Right next door to Kittery, Maine.

About 60 miles north of Boston, maybe a couple degrees colder there. Northern Maine has horrendous winters, you won't be experiencing anything like that in coastal NH.

I saw places like peabody, lynn, Danvers are roughly 40 minutes from portsmouth. What are these cities like? Train into Boston is around 20-30 minutes from Salem / Lynn

What am i missing here?

I lived in Portsmouth NH for a decade. It's easily the best place I've ever lived. If you can afford the housing, you'd be hard pressed to find a better place in New England.

I was living right on the back channel. Here's what I looked at out my bedroom window every morning.

As far as climate goes, tomatoes went in the ground Memorial Day. It's a cool summer since the ocean temperatures are below 60F into July. It's coastal so it gets pretty much the same amount of snow as the Boston north shore.

Forget Lynn, Lynn is ghetto (folks will tell you how its turning the corner-its improving but still pretty poor, large and dense/ugly/hood) maybe you'd like Salem-thats a place thats actually changed for the better. I think Peabody is undesirable...but maybe. )

Going to and living near Boston is overrated as you'll do most of what you want to do as a visitor from the suburbs within the first couple months. Its not NYC -its not even Philly.
