We currently live in NY and it's too expensive. We are looking for a 3 bedroom condo or home and our budget is 225K or less. We also need good schools and to be close to a city so I can find work, I am in sales. I know this is a tall order, but we have found some places in the midwest where we can do this, but we are hoping to stay closer to NY.

You probably will find what you are looking for in Western MA. Anywhere else in the state and that price range is difficult if not impossible to find. Even that price range can be quite difficult to find in this area in anywhere but rural areas.
Unfortunately, the job market in MA is kind of rough right now (of course, that could be said for anyplace in the country). |

If you live in Southeastern NY I can understand it being expensive, but the northern parts are usually very affordable. Have you considered staying around Buffalo, Rochester, or Syracuse?

What about Southern New Hampshire? The Manchester area?

Try the poineer valley area- Ludlow, Amherst, Hadley and surrounding towns.
You have Hartford for work, or possibly Springfield. Ask about specific towns if you are interested in this area. I don't reccomend Springfield, Chicopee or Holyoke as places to relocate, but look at the surrounding towns and you should be able to find a good place to live. In 2006, MA was ranked the 7th most liveable state. NY was somewhere in the 30th range. Don't let "Taxachusettes" fool you. I have lived in So NY and in MA, MA is MUCH cheaper all around. |

BUT- don't forget that MA is also very expensive. MSN has 3 Boston area zip codes listed in the top 10 of most expensive places in the country: Cambridge, Boston, and areas in Essex County.
I am from NY and also have family on the west coast. I used to travel domestically and internationally doing conferences- so I got to see alot of cities. You might try Albany- the economy is really picking up there: more jobs and very affordable compared to some areas. I wouldn't move to the Boston area expecting to save money or find a 3 bedroom condo for under $225K with good schools- that just doesn't exist up here. You mentioned the Midwest- you might try areas around Minneapolis.... So many people associate NY with NYC. Yes- NYC is also expensive, but it is wrong to compare apples to oranges. |
