Central Square: good restaurants/bars, interesting mix of people, on the Red Line (direct to South Station)

Davis Square: all of the above, but near Tufts University, so lots of undergrads.

South End: metro-hip (or as much as any area in Boston can be), high gay population, excellent (and pricey) restaurants.
