Default Hello Massachusetts!

Hello my friends from Ma. Plans have changed again. My brother convinced us that moving to a depressed area like Rochester to buy a less expensive home would not be good for my husband's economic future and that we should go to Boston if we must live in the Northeast, so.....here we go again! Looking forward to hearing about areas that are affordable or can rent with a reasonable commute to Boston with good schools and a nice town center. Looking forward to coming back in June.

Puffle, although real estate is in fact going to appreciate faster in Rochester the next two years (9%)compared to the Boston areas 1.5% decline- prices are still much lower in upstate NY As a base. Most of New England remains a better place to buy in the long run- the Boston area will remain and become more important locally and globally in years to come- therefore prices in the long run will go up further and faster.

Pittsburgh is another cheap city real estate wise- and really a bargain for what you get culture and amenities wise; Yet it still will not have the' marque name' like that of Boston or A' Connecticut' - well you get the picture. By the way Hartford is the only major metro area in New England projected to see a rise in real estate in the next 2 years (6%)

Smart decision.

Thank you. It wasn't actually the appreciation of real estate that was the worry, but having a larger talent pool to hire for my husband's growing executive search firm.

Check out southern NH. Most is within 45 min to Boston and it has A large talent pool for your work. And the cost of living and Crime rate is much lower than Mass.

Boston has become a world class city

the new future is 'ideas'- Boston abounds with them.
The old concept of costs means less- for Boston NYC DC Seattle San Fran have a precious capital called intellect and ideas. The new capital is information and ideas- the old capital is manufacturing.

Smarty as much as I like you-you seem out of the loop- and think costs are what drive ideas- they do not. Ideas and information cost- that is the new paradigm. Boston and most of New England have ideas and information that going for them- their colleges and Universities are among the best. It seems that many believe that costs drive a regions economy- they do, but more for a manufacturing based economy.

The real dilemma in the USA and New England is health care reform- and Massachusetts is the first state to realize this problem- once again ideas to solve problems for the greater of all citizens. Parochial thinking of the past accomplishes little.

Ideas generated by smart people did help local economy. Great example was DEC created by MIT grad. Unfortunately, MA did not do as well in the past few years with ideas. It seems the Standford guys did much better. Google zipcode has one of the highest housing cost. LOL.

In the meantime, I saw an interesting idea from McDonalds the other day. They have someone (call center) in another state taking your drive through order and send the order electronically back to the Mcdonald to cook. It is an amazing idea. They save so much money hiring one person for 3 drive throughs instead of hiring 3 people.

I believe that Necessity the Mother of all Inventions. Ideas come from fulfilling a need. If cost is too high, some idea will be created to adapt. Of course, disruptive technology/innovation changes everything including how we look at the world. However, I agree with you about the changing paradigm and the cost of health care being a problem.

On a side note. We spend more and more $$$ on the education industry. You can practically make a career out of talking about education. People are so willing to pay $50-100/hr on tutors and another $10-40K for advisor to guide you into college. I see kids coming out of college with $100K student loans. I often wonder how the cost of education affects these kids when they start in a hole. It may be more than the digital divide.

Smarty and Puffle

The state of Massachusetts will mandate Jan 1, 2007 that all citizens MUST purchase health care, if they currently do not have insurance. this applies to a single person or a family. However insurance companies in Mass. will only be able to charge you based on a sliding scale of what your income is. A percentage of how much you are above the poverty level. For some low income people and families it will basically be almost free.

This makes Mass. the first state nationally to finally begin to do something about the soaring costs of health care, and provide accessibility to nearly all. A great move by the lawmakers- where Republicans and Democrats worked together to truly do something for the people of the state. Bravo!
