Relocating job to Otis (Ottis) AFB (New Bedford, Falmouth: real estate, rentals, motels)

I have a friend at work who's relocating his job to Otis (Ottis?) Air Force Base. Question he has is: where do most people who work there prefer to live? Of course he wants something close to events (he's mid-20s), but he wants somewhere fairly safe as well. Also, it's been said that the area surrounding there is fairly affluent, are there areas surrounding there that are fairly affordable?

Have your friend check real estate listings on the net. You can get good info as to houseing/renting costs out there. I've been out of MA for 10 years now, but I did enjoy my 8 years on the Cape.
I lived in E. Falmouth which is about a sneeze away from Otis AFB. There is also Sandwich, & Mashpee which have gates on their sides. The base is in a nice location for the sites around. Woods Hole isn't far away. The Barnstable County fair grounds is close and they have some nice events there. A family friend used to be D O D out there and drove from New Bedford. But in off season it took about 25 minutes to get there. Height of the tourist season it could take over an hour. In the winter if the snow or ice or even the winds are bad; they have closed the bridges. Cost might be less if your friend opts to live a little further away, but with gas prices and also time factor friend might want to stay closer. Also how long does friend think that they might be out there, permanant move or temporary? There are seasonal rentals, summers are expensive, but I had a cute little cottage I rented in the winter that was significantly less then summer. But then one finds themself moveing every few months. Plus there are some motels that rent by the month. Good Luck.

I would say a lot of people prefer to live in Bourne since the Base is located there. I actually lived in Bourne for 8 years and I'm in my late 20's now. As far as fun goes, your friend would have to travel to Falmouth, Mashpee, or Hyannis since there isn't much going on in Bourne. I wouldn't say the area is that affluent. I know the Cape has that reputation but it is area specific. Bourne is pretty affordable as are most places on the Upper Cape.

He's switching his job to out there. He's a contractor, so as long as his company keeps the contract, I'm sure he'll stay there.

My pleasure Rathagos you and friend are more than welcome;
I miss the cape. I lived in Falmouth, worked in Mashpee and went to Sandwich so often I totally forgot about the Bourne side Gate. Which I believe is the main gate.
