I am trying to get a picture on the differences between the two cities. They both seem to be a bit gritty still but up and coming. Not looking for a very refined place, but still like a bit of entertainment (ie Music, hiking, plays, festivals etc). Culture would be great as we live in a very culturally diverse neighborhood but it is not the most important thing in the world. Housing prices seem about the same (=Great) , seem to both have an artsy vibe (=Great). i like the look of the homes in North Adams (historic) does Pittsfield offer the same stock or does it look more run down?

They are both up and coming but North Adams is further ahead. North Adams has the advantage of being a college town and having Mass Moca so that helps a bit. Pittsfield has a lot of potential but after living there for 3 years we didn't see much happening. Yes, the Colonial theater was rebuilt and also I think it is Barrington Stage theater moved into town. A few really cool restaurants opened but have since closed down. Crime is pretty bad. Too bad, the downtown could be so nice.
The Southeast part of Pittsfield is very nice but is geared more towards families. There are some very nice older homes with a lot of character. |
