I don't even understand this question. If you equate "angry and cynical" with "cool," go to NY.

Thanks for your responses. I live in the midwest, where earnest, nice and chirpy is the acceptable demeanor. I'm not rude, nor am I mean or even unpleasant. (I think some of your answers are rude and unpleasant.) But I'm cynical, and I'm easily outraged by rude behavior and the behavior of politicians and other hypocrites. I find my outrage is not welcome here, nor is my cynicism. I'm wondering if I will be forced into smoldering resentment in Boston. I didn't find Bostonians particularly rude (New Yorkers are much ruder), I simply didn't feel I had much in common with them. Boston, compared with NYC, felt bland to me. I'm wondering if I'll be forced to act "nice" all the time, when I'd rather express my true self (cynical and angry). Thanks again for all your responses

So what was the point of your initial post? A serious question, btw.
I would imagine that, in Boston, you are perfectly welcome to express your true self (cynical and angry) if there is a reason to do so. I highly doubt that anyone will "force" you to act "nice" all the time.

Angry and cynical over politics and taxes? Please be our guest. Mass state motto:"politicians in Shanghai are much more corrupt..."
The real question is can you safely and with appropriate verbiage manuver your (we hope, compact) vehicle along the city sidewalks? Don't try it if you can't play with the big boys.

If you didn't like Boston before, you won't like it now. Try NY.

way it is
Look we New Englanders don't have time to worry about the people around us with the exception of our friends and family. We are to busy trying to get through our lives. To be honest we don't have the time to care what your politics are or what your personality is like. Unless it interfers with our daily lives or effect our loved ones. We just don't care what your opinion is. I know it sounds rude (and maybe it is.) But that's just how it is in New England.

That's pretty much it in Boston. You can do whatever you want, nobody is going to give a rodent's rump as long as you step on the gas when the light turns green. It's a society of tremendous personal indifference - a great place to live anonymously in a crowd. You could walk down Boylston Street buck naked and I would bet 99% of the people there wouldn't have a thing to say. People here have an infinite capacity to ignore.

Perhaps by moving to the historic and culturally rich environment of Boston, you may find your anger and cynicism greatly diminished. I have always found that to be the case. But we are all different. In any case, best of luck to you!

On the bright side, you can also say they have a great capacity to mind their own business There's 2 sides to every coin. I recently had a warm and friendly person drive me absolutely crazy in a store, persistently butting into my personal conversation with a sales associate to give her opinions about every aspect of a product I was trying to choose. She was waiting for someone else and had nothing better to do, apparently. I would have been eternally grateful if she had any capacity to ignore
