You are wasting your life wondering where in the world you can be angry and cynical? My feeling is you will never be happy wherever you live. Many people are rude and cynical in NYC because of the pressure-cooker environment there, not because they were born that way or like to be that way. Keep that in mind.

How about neither.
Move out of NE completely...
Born and raised in MA until I was 21.
Visited NY plenty of times during the summers and what not.
You couldn't pay me enough to move back to NE if you hit the Mega Millions!
Your money doesn't go very far in NE because the COL is through the roof, however you look at it...taxes, tourism, casinos, etc. Also, the population density compared to the space available in MA, NY, RI, or CT is crazy!!! You can't even breath, ecspecially in NYC and Boston.
Your still in the snowbelt, remember that next year when your looking for a pellet stove to lower your cost of heating your 2-3 story NE home because oil is too high. Cheaper to cool, then heat!
Your chances of encountering an "angry" person just increases if you live in NE based solely on the odds of an increasing population index in a rather competitive area of living. Not only that, it's a fast paced lifestyle living in NE...if you can't keep up with the ever growing lifestyle in NE, your either going to get angry and aggresive, or fall victim to the lifestyle.
All and all, there are just as many "angry" people in NE as there are "happy go lucky" people in the Carolinas...which by the way is the sister state to MA!!!!!
Peace
