Can you be angry and cynical in Boston?
This sounds like a strange question, but we're trying to decide between Boston and New York, and, given my personality (kinda angry and cynical, definitely not sweet and friendly), we're thinking New York will suit me better. But DH is set on Boston, so my question is: will I be a fish out of water in Boston? I've lived in Boston before pre-kids and didn't like it. I found it somewhat "beige" and without an edge. But I love New England, and admire Boston's quaintness. Appreciate any honest answers. I don't want to be a pariah!

I think many people will argue that it helps to be cynical and angry in Boston. People in Boston can be many things, including sweet and friendly, but that is not their prevailing reputation. There are many threads on here about how rude or abrupt or reserved New Englanders in general and Bostonians in particular can be.

People in the northeast can be pleasant- but also rude, angry and yes very cynical. Boston and NY can be similar in their demeanor. The pace of life in the urban northeast, the competition, all foster a sort of aggressiveness you will not find elsewhere.
Being angry and cynical in both these places will not shock locals- the trick is to be at least nice part of the time-if possible.
The west coast, in California which can be even more competitive, much more shallow, and instead of cynical- one meets many 'jaded' individuals.

You'll fit in very well in Boston if you're angry for no apparent reason and act like you have a 2X4 stuck up your butt.

Out of curiousity, where are you currently living? Is your cynicism appreciated there?
I doubt whether anyone will even take notice of your angry demeanor in Boston or NY.

[SIZE=2]If you did not like Boston back than you will be miserable here. It is just too small and can not be ever compared with the City. The city has more of everything than Boston.
…besides the traffic will definitely keep your angry soul satisfied.

This can't be serious. It the OPs only other post they say they found Boston "unfriendly" and in this post it's like thats what they want.
Everyone knows people have a reputation for being angry and cynical here. This is a troll thread.

Hey Chianti,
Maybe Bostonians should have been nicer to the British back in 1775 right? please do us a favor- stay in Houston if that's your attitude. Boston has enough rude people already! Yay for Boston!

I'm not sure how the original poster (if not a troll) experiences the world seeing his/her alleged anger and cynicism. Would I recognize it walking down the street? Standing in line to buy takeout coffee?
Maybe my attitude towards the questioin is rather New England-like. I don't give a rat's butt about your attitude or feelings- keep 'em to yourself in public, and what you do at home is your business.
Sounds like a posturing late adolescent attitude to me.
