Consider yourself lucky. In San Francisco and Manhattan, $460K is just a 500 sq ft 1-2 bedroom Condo.

Are you being snooty? That was the way we were brought up. Whole Language versus Phonics. Teachers told us not to worry about spelling; just keep writing. Those parents just did not have Google spell check toolbar on their computers.
Smarty, you crack me up. Where are you from? And please tell me that other MA folks have the same sense of twisted humor...I'm going to need a good laugh every month when my mortgage is due. LL

wpotsie is on a distinguished road
LOL!!!! Be glad to, lorilou! Gotta love the Mexican food, too! You won't find much of that in MA. Not the greatest for your figure, either. Don'tget me wrong, I love San Antonio. Most of my friends are white northern transplants like myself or native Hispanics. We're a great mix and have a great time! No BS backstabbing, either. If I had kids they would be going to private schools, though. Most of the high schools are these mall-ish looking complexes with 3-5000 students. That's half the population of the town where I grew up. Happy New Year, Lorilou!

I will also say that I loved living there due to the laid-back lifestyle, great food, friendly people, etc. Education level is off, you're right, and that's a hindrance to the community in my opinion. God, how I miss those margaritas! Please go out and guzzle a few in my honor! Happy New Year, LL

wpotsie,
thought i'd make a few restaurant suggestions to you, there in S.A.:
The Blanco Cafe (best enchiladas, OMG!), Los Barrios(try the puffy tacos: they're 2Die4), Chris Madrid's (my mouth waters for their Macho Nachos), and Jacala's on Fredicksburg. These are all total dives, but damn good food. Enjoy your time there, and leave when they get on your nerves. Lorilou

I grew up oversea where Smarties is brand of chocolate and where spellings do matter. However, my kids had experienced many teachers that think putting ideas down on paper are more important. In any case, my kids now do all writings on the computer with automatic spelling correction.

LL, I'm the only wacky one here. May be it is because I just paid my heating oil bill ($300-400 every fill up.) Need some comic relief.

Btw, Taco Bell is the best Mexican restaurant around here. (just kidding; it used to be) In the last few years, there's an explosion of small Mexican restaurants in the area. However, the number is small compare to Chinese and Thai restaurants.

Smarties are my husband's fav! Isn't there a really good authentic Mexican restaurant in Waltham? I also liked one in Woburn near a theater, but just not the same as the Mexican Food in California.

Smarty, fill me in on this "heating oil" refill thing. We don't have oil for heat here...How often does that have to be done, who does it, tell me all I need to know about heating oil. Don't you guys have natural gas heating up there? it's got to be a lot easier, I swear! Help me, Oh, Smart One. Lorilou

Some streets do not have natural gas. As I mention, I live away from people so the gas company decide not to pipe an extra mile to get to a few houses. There is no city planning around here. Even if you have gas on your street, you may still have oil heat or oil heat equipment for your house. It depend on what the previous owners put in the house. Cost comparison between Oil and Gas is similar. Some year, oil is cheaper and other time gas is cheaper. However, gas is cleaner and the equipment is usually easier to maintain. I would not even consider converting from one energy source to another unless your equipment is over 20-30 year old. Big $$$.

An Oil truck comes to your house and fill a 175gal tank in your basement. Then there is a oil burner to create heat just like natural gas. You can sign a contract with a oil company and they will come fill your tank and maintain the equipment. During the winter, I usually see them come every 3 weeks. Again, it depends on the size of your house, how efficient your house insulate, how cold is it outside, what temperature do you set inside, or if you use it to heat hot water. Heating oil (which is diesel without tax) cost $2-2.50 a gallon. To fill a tank, it will cost $300-400. You will learn quickly NOT to set temperature above 65-70 during daytime and much lower at night.

That's pricey, but I guess you get a break for much of the year when the weather doesn't require A/C or heat? I notice many homes don't have A/C, but I've heard it's humid and hot at times. Do people without a/c just suffer through that period, and how long does that period usually last? Thank you so much for "schooling" me; this is going to take some getting used to. lorilou

People either suffer or get window a/c. This is my worst nightmare...never have been without central a/c and the humidity can start in June and end in September, off and on. Beware of the mosquitos!!!!!!! Just walking your dog on the grass can give you several bites. When we came back to California for a visit from Ma. my son and I looked as if we had chicken pox from all of our bites! I know Texas has pretty bad humidity too. I was in Dallas from June to Sept. and I wanted to kill myself! I can take the cold much better than heat with humidity.
