Moving to Massachusetts from England
Hi,
I am moving to Chestnut Hill at the beginning of July from England. I am moving with my job, am single, 37, no kids and do not know anyone in Massachusetts.....a brave step I know!
Any ideas on meeting up with people to make friends?
Thank you.....Melissa

Try British Expatriate Community : British Expat Community - there are quite a few of us Brits in Mass.
Hmmm..... I suppose of course you could make the most out of the move and make friends with Americans instead.....

Hi Melissa, feel free to send me a PM. I'm British and moved here 1 year ago and been living just around the corner from chestnut hill (in Brookline). I'm moving to Back Bay next month. I'd be happy to meet up with you and show you around.
Stephen.

Try meetup.com and look in the Boston area for a group of people who might share some interest of yours. A friend of mine started a "childfree" meetup in central Mass/New Hampshire, and there are a lot of people who attend- dinners, outings, karaoke, bike ride...
If you ride bicycles, the Charles River Wheelmen is a big bike riding group in Boston (and I think a lot of people in your age group).
Very generally speaking, I think you're more likely to meet people under, say, 35 (and those without kids) more into the city rather than out towards the suburbs. In-town Brookline is a wonderful place to meet all kinds of under-35s (Chestnut Hill area more suburban and even more upscale).
There is a British consulate in Cambridge- maybe they have some ideas.
Good luck, and welcome!

Hi Stephen,
Thank you for the reply. Did you move here with your job? How did you find settling in to the 'American' way of living?
I am currently in Boston, but am flying back to London tonight. Then come back on the 30th June permanently.
My msn/email is mj_206_1@hotmail.com if you would like to get in touch. I would be really grateful with any help I can get.
Melissa

Oh - just another thought. There's a Boston Brits group on Facebook and they seem to meet every Thursday - never been to one myself as I live too far out to go on a weeknight but might be a good way of networking and meeting new people.

Melissa/ all hi
As a Brit bound for Mass too, my US wife and our children are due out late fall, so let me know how you get on. Unlike you I need to find work, we're all coming over in early June for a couple of weeks to have a look around the Bridgewater area so any and all, polite, advice would be greatly appreciated. Oh, just in case - you never know- I'll be looking for opportunities in Marketing/ Advertising.
Regards all
Harvey
