need a cheap apartment! :(
Hi everyone
I'm moving to MA from Western NY (near rochester), starting a job in Southborough. I'm looking to find an apartment for less than 700/month within a reasonable commute to work... but I'm not sure what towns to look in, where a commute is better/worse, good/bad neighborhood, etc etc. if anyone has any insight or advice, or places to look for cheap apartments, please let me know? It's tough for me trying to find a place on such a tight budget!

Would you consider getting a room-mate? Getting your own place for that price will be tough. Try looking in Lynn, or far from the city like Fall River. You'll probably need to look at studios.

Bad geography, ice cream! Someone working in Southborough can't even think about living in Lynn. Ice cream is right that old manufacturing towns tend to have cheaper apartments--no different in that respect than WNY or most other places--but with city neighborhoods you get the bad mixed in with the good. Worcester is close to Southborough, also Milford and Marlborough are blue-collar cities. One of the posters on this forum lives in Southborough--maybe she'll have some specifics for you.

You could get such an apartment in Ayer, on Rt. 2. Would that be a reasonable commute to Sborough? Check the Community Newspaper Group's weekly paper for rentals in Ayer, Shirley, etc.

Try Hudson or Worcester, maybe Milford, or perhaps even Woonsocket, RI. Maybe look into Framingham for a room mate (it'll be a college kid). the cheaper rentals are likely not going to be in the best areas, but some aren't too bad and have a decent amount to offer. Some of the towns I mentioned are a drive, but it'll probably be tough to find something very close for <700.
I would absolutely consider trying to find a room mate (put an ad up on craigslist and start screening!). It'll be cheaper that way, and if you're paying for a 2bedroom split 2 ways, you can probably get something much nicer and closer to work.
