Default Safe places to Live and Rent near Springfield, MA

I have just gotten a new job in Springfield, MA. I am currently living near Charlotte, NC and am looking for a safe place to rent. I have heard some bad things about Springfield and it kind of has me a little worried. Everyone keeps saying in these posts how bad the crime is there. Is it really as bad as everyone makes it out to be? I have been hearing some people seem to favor some of the suburbs or even CT. I have found some apartments in Chicopee, Ware, South Hadley, and in downtown Springfield and in Enfield and Broad Brook in CT. Any answers would be very helpful as I may be moving soon.

Chris

Well, I have lived in Chicopee my whole life until this past September, move to TN, and Springfield has seen better days. Its not like you are going to get shot walking down the street just for HA HAs. I would recommend staying in the suburbs. Chicopee, has its nice parts. There are different areas within Chicopee, Fairview is probably the best area. Willamansett, Chicopee falls, and the Center can be skeptical. South Hadley is still all and all pretty good, not much crime going on there. I'm not too familiar with CT, and Ware is a little bit of a distance. All depends on how much you want to travel to and from work. Longmedow and East Longmedow are nice too, a little more pricey though, they are on the MA CT line, so its close to Springfield.

Hopefully this helps you a little more. Good Luck on your move and new job. Hope you enjoy MA. I sure miss not living there.

Im not sure how much has changed in but back in 2001/2002 we lived in the Springfield area for 9 months while my Dh was working on a project for a local insurance co. We rented a condo at a place called The Regency in Agawam. The units were/are individually owned, managed by a company. Our condo was in excellent condition, the grounds were neat and the staff friendly.

We avoided Springfield as much as possible and did most shopping/eating out etc. in Enfield Ct. Friends of ours used to live at the Fox Hill Apts in Enfield. Seemed like a nice complex.

After living in Agawam we bought a house in the Sturbridge area. Sold it last year and moved to NC (Raleigh) Sturbridge is a very nice area, but more convenient to those who commutes east on the Masspike Ware is 2 towns over from Sturbrige and the beginning of the Pioneer Valley/Western MA. Its a bit of a hike from Ware to Springfield.

Good-luck in MA. We love NC, MA wont see us again

You might consider Somers CT- not far from the Mass border and less then a half hour from Springfield. Somers was rated as one of the best small towns to live in- according to CNN/Money Magazine last year.

West of the Connecticut river, in CT also consider Suffield and Granby- close to Springfield as well.

depending on the part of springfield it isn't all that bad. i have live in downtown in an apartment, Indian orchard, and forest park. out of those 3 i would suggest forest park. downtown has a lot of crime but it's a nice place to spend the day. they have nice museums and good shows come to the mass mutual center. all places have crime. i live in wilbraham which barley has ANY crime and my car got broken into. CT has very nice places to rent. one of my friends rented a house for 4 years in Enfield but it eventually got to expensive. Chicopee isn't too bad and to commute is pretty good too.
