Not to nit pick but Plymouth is nearly as large as LA (the town not the county). Northern plymouth isn't the cape. I consider the cape to be anything past the canal. I'd also say that many of the rail stations have a fair amount of parking so even if you can't find housing in that town the ones around it might also suit your needs. I've never seen the parking lot totally full...the trains however can get totally packed dependent on the time. The one to plymouth sometimes goes to plymouth and sometimes goes to kingston it is not as frequent as other stops.

Plymouth may be geographically as large as LA (I'll have to trust you on that one), but I don't think anyone can draw a comparison there. Apples and oranges.
Plymouth is also a good option for someone who likes to be near the coast, Cape and Islands, without having to traverse a bridge every day and the traffic one may encounter in-season. They've also done some wise expansion, keeping shopping malls, box stores, etc. away from the residential areas but convenient for all. Living on Cape Cod, I'll travel to Plymouth before I'll go to Hyannis, which is a disaster.

My husband's family lives in Canton. Truly, a lovely community which I think fits your criteria. My sister-in-law has her girls in the public school system and she has been very pleased. Teachers are very willing to work with motivated kids who are looking for more challenging assignments. I find it a very friendly, unpretentious town.

Goodluck and WELCOME to MA!

Second Camer on the schools in Canton. I have three nephews and a niece who have or are now going through Canton Public Schools. All went through elementary through high school. Two have since graduated college. I've also spent quite a bit of time there socially and find the people to be lovely.

Canton is a great town and fantastic location for any type of consistent travel as it is near all major routes and has easy access to commuter rails and Amtrak. But to find a house like that for 400K might be tough.
