1812 was on before they went to the national broadcast. It was on around 930ish.

For the life of me I can't understand why the 1812 Overture is considered such a patriotic staple. It was written by a Russian (Tchaikovsky) to commemorate a Russian battle with France. It has no connection whatsoever to U.S. history and it was written over 100 years AFTER the signing of the Declaration of Independence -- the U.S. had already celebrated it's Centennial when the 1812 Overture debuted in 1882. The Overture didn't even begin to be played in the U.S. for Independence Day celebrations until the 1930's.
The patriotic fondness for the 1812 Overture is equivalent to those who think "American Woman" by The Guess Who is a 1970's paean about the wonderful ladies of the United States.
The 1812 Overture is a fun piece of music, to be sure. But it's about as connected to the Fourth of July as pizza is to Christmas.

It was also on briefly for the national broadcast at 10. What did you all think of the fireworks this year? I thought it was overkill at the end and with so many fireworks, you could barely see towards the end with all the smoke!

I agree with you. Before I use to work all 4th(OT) come home becuase the family was else where and enjoy myself ,take shower...throw a steak on the grill and then turn on PBS and watch the Pops from Boston and it would always end in the 1812 with fire works. If I'm not mistaken Arthur Fildler(sp) started it with the Mass National Guard and their cannons.

Except that pizza would be connected with Christmas if people had pizza for Christmas dinner every year for a few decades. We are creating culture as we go, no need to be such a purist
