2008 1/2 year city murder rates
A mid year report on violent crime in the larger cities in New England. Could not find data on Worcester, which leads me to believe they've had a quiet year.
In order of most frequent to least frequent per capita:
Hartford: 14 murders (124,387 population) 1 murder per 8,884 residents
New Haven: 11 murders (124,512 population) 1 murder per 11,319 residents
Boston: 33 murders (590,763 population) 1 murder per 17,901 residents
Providence: 8 murders (176,365 population) 1 murder per 22,045 residents
Springfield: 5 murders (154,082 population) 1 murder per 30,816 residents

The Bean is oviously gonna win the murda title for sure.
FYI you can live in the worst neighborhoods in any of those cities and you will NOT i repeat NOT get shot unless you are in a gang, into drugs, owe people money or are doing anything u shouldn't be. I'm sick of people telling other people on here cities are "Dangerous" there only "Dangerous" if your out looking for trouble.

Compared to Philly, you guys are angels. As of July 3, 2008 164 homicides this year. Last year we averaged over one slaying per day, some of them cops. In 2007 a cop was shot in broad daylight in a coffee shop.
"We had a homicide where a woman stabbed a guy over a bag of potato chips," said (Police Commissioner) Ramsey. "It's stupid stuff, absolutely stupid."

1 murder per 8,832 residents (1,448,394 population (2006 census estimate))

True, and that's probably due to the total population between the two areas. Hartford's just barely hitting 125k, Philly is over 1.4mil. At least Hartford's issues are somewhat contained to a smaller(ish) population. Even worse, Philly's population is on the decline, and has been for some time, which could lead to that murder/#of residents becoming even worse. Check out today's article on that. All cities seem to be declining, I think it has more to do with the undercounting of minority populations than anything.

Every large city is likely to have a cop slaying or two...no surprise there, really. And while Philadelphia does have an elevated homicide/violent crime ratio, it still does not contend with cities such as Detroit and St. Louis. Detroit's population is about 60% that of Philly's, yet Detroit tends to have 380-420 murders each year for the past 6-7 years (which is far lighter than it's peak in 1974, which was 714). The reason I bring this 1974 figure up is because this is when Detroit's population once mirrored what is the modern day Philadelphia population.

Celticz - you made a good claim but to add to what you said, I think everyone is vulnerable to violence at this point. One does not have to be a gang member or what not to be subjected to crime, for instance, I have heard situations were an innocent person walking on his business gets robbed and then short for no reason. Thus, my claim is that everyone is a target of violence today.
