Pods vs. Door to Door- moving/storage units??
Has anyone had any experience using either/both of these services? We will be moving in ther Spring and have heard they are a good option but wasn't really sure of the differences or pros/cons.
Thanks-

My understanding is PODs are mostly use for quick temporary storage (I see many just stay on the property) while doing remodeling. If needed, a truck can pick up the POD and put (the POD) into storage/warehouse. This way you do not need to load /unload twice. However, I do not know if the pricing justify it.
For Door to Door, you have to load the truck and then unload either at your new house or the storage facilities. If you store it, you will have to reload the items onto the truck again before unloading at your new house.

There's a thread in either General US or Other Topics about moving services--and it appears pod.com does make deliveries.
Actually, here's the link http://www.city-data.com/forum/gener...ip-movers.html

Be sure to check if you need a permit to put a POD on the street, driveway or where ever. In MA probably do. Be sure the truck can get to the place the POD is going to go.
Nothing in MA is easy, quick or cheap. Not even PODS.
POD's are a great idea for some situations, if they go door to door and you don't exceed their weight limitations. The total costs can be about equal to a conventional mover and you get more time to absorb the moving stuff around.
I knew some people that used them for storage during construction projects. Just be sure you know exactly where it is going to go, they love to give out tickets for improper placement. Also be sure it can fit into the space planned.

Good tips Cosmic- we have a privtae driveway, so I don't expect there would be issues. I have seen them in in nearby neighborhoods as well.
From what I have heard, movers are drastically more expensive. We are also concerned about the normal damages most people experience with movers.
We will continue to reserach all the options- thanks for the help!

POD vs. Truck
When I moved from NY to Gulf Coast, I used ABF U-Pack with good results. You tell them how much you have to pack (#rooms, etc.) and they estimate a truck size. They drop off the trailer the day before (or 2 days) and you pack your stuff into the truck. You lock a wall in place, they pick up the trailer and go to their next location, where they continue to fill the truck (there's the savings). They arrived at my new location at exactly the time they said and dropped off the trailer overnight. At the loading end (NY), I ended up hiring movers by the hour (muscles). At the unloading end, I had plenty of strong nephews to unload. Gin/HomeAgain
