The city has a website on neighborhoods at springfieldcityhall.com, but I always tell people to go to this one which is a little more complete:

City of Homes | Choose Springfield, Massachusetts

Particularly sift through the neighborhood descriptions: http://www.choosespringfieldmass.com...neighborhoods/

i've lived here a long time, and worked here, and the crime stuff is overblown. It's a great place to live.

Default homes in springfield

Hi-
You should move to our neighborhood. Everyone is very friendly and there is zero crime. I have lived here for 4 years and have loved it.
Our neighborhood is called Forest Hills/Oak Hollow. It is a section of Sixteen Acres. The homes are mostly ranch or cape style. Each (my guess) has 0.25+ acres, so they don't feel on top of one another. There is a good mix of older people and young families. I think the range for houses is $175,000-$275,000. The lower range is for the ranch style, the higher for the cape style.
Good Luck.

What is the Zip for Forest Hills/Oak Hollow, I didn't see them on links submitted by WestMass 79. Anyone have comments about West Springfield?
