Just for an update, she did get the dog, I was told by the person who looked at the girl's house that it was an excellent family and although not in the very best place that she would be a superb home for the animal.

Thanks for all of your advice.

PS-being the 19th largest crime city isnt a big deal, I am sure Little Rock (where I live) was a LOT closer to #1.

Thanks again

I wouldn't go that far. However, there a lot of people that WILL walk out in front of your car or cut you off causing you to it them and go straight to a crooked chiro who is in bed with the attorney. Protect yourself if you move to that area. Get high limits on your policy and be REALLY CAREFUL!

Default Stay Out of Springfield

This city is no good for your health and well-being. It has been on the verge of bankruptcy for several years, has political corruption, a very bad school system (with a recent score of 200 out of 1000), and is filled with loud thumping cars day and night, loud music, drugs, crime, bad roads, litter and trash everywhere, and very rude, uncaring neighbors who won't let you get a good night's sleep.

Need I say more? Springfield used to be a decent place to live 30 years ago. But not now. The politicians have allowed it to become like this. If you must live in Western MA, pick one of the smaller outlying towns. My wife was born and raised here and has lived here off and on for 44 years. We are here temporarily for elder care but will be leaving as soon as we are financially able. Avoid the greater Springfield area like the plague!

This string is ridiculous. You will not be shot in broad daylight in downtown Springfield. Victims in Springfield shootings are usually perps of crimes themselves. You've got about the same chance of being randomly shot in downtown Springfield as you do in Amherst.

There are a lot of great neighborhoods in Springfield (Forest Park, East Forest Park, 16 Acres, Atwater Park) with an incredible amount of great architecture. The city is the cultural center of Western Mass with great museums, Symphony Hall, Basketball Hall of Fame, Dr. Suess sculpture park, etc.

Are there problems, sure? But this string is weighed too far on one end, there are a lot of great things about the city and one can only hope that things are starting to revert back in the right direction.

Well Prudence, you obviously have not been around long enough to see how Springfield has changed over the past 30 years, have you? Or if you have, you have been living in one of the better sections of the city or in one of the small surrounding towns and have kept your head in the sand. Have you ever lived near the 'X' ? How about the North End with all the druggies? Have you ever lived anywhere else but here in New England?

Yes, Springfield has some nice things about it. However...the evil in this city now far outweighs the good. No, this discussion is not "ridiculous" as you seem to think. If you are really interested in statistics, the Morgan Quitno 2005 crime survey of 354 cities lists Springfield, MA as the 18th "most dangerous" city to live in. Go to here to check it for yourself:

And then stop living in denial!

The discussion was actually about me wanting to adopt a dog up there & I did, the dog is doing wonderfully.

I would like to point out, you can say what you will about Springfield, but Memphis (who is my neighbor) is 13 and Little Rock (where I live a very small town) is 23rd.

To be quite honest I am surprised LR isnt any higher. LR has a population of 200,000 people and had 42 murders as of August last year. The crime here is horrible I cant imagine Springfield being any worse.

Yeah, Atlanta is 3rd, Washington DC is 6th, it's quite a list of disgusting cities that nobody wants to be in. Please.

Springfields crime rate has come down 16% in the past year, and declining steadly every year since 2001.
