I live in Lakeville which borders taunton. i can't help you with the schools because i don't have children but i can answer a few of your other questions. taunton is a diversified city, the cost of living is lower than the boston area but higher than michigan (have a sister that lives in MI). There is lots of places to shop (target, pier 1, kohls, tjmaxx), it has a nice mall (Macy's, old navy, jc penny, sears), some good restaurants too and a great movie theatre at the mall. Taunton borders Raynham which also has some nice restaurants and shops (bed, bath, beyond, bobs, marshalls, walmart) the closest major city would most likely be providence, RI (it takes me just under 30-35 minutes to get to providence) w/boston being a very close second (40 minutes with little traffic). Lakeville is almost half way between providence and boston give or take a few miles), taunton is pretty close (15 miles) to new bedford but i don't know if i could consider that a major city and is also near plymouth (20 miles).

Taunton is an old New England working class town- pretty diverse
close proximity to Providence and Boston -as well as Plymouth and Cape Cod.
Housing will not be cheap- but prices are dropping- and its becoming a buyers market.
Lots of shopping, places to eat- and a milder climate then MI.
