Holliston is nice but entirely suburban. Natick is a good town as well, has a small downtownish area and the mall and all that. I would not recommend it however if you are commuting to Marlborough, lots of congestion on all routes in between.

Westborough is your best bet if you want good schools, close by, and a little bit of density (don't think for one minute that it's anything but a bedroom community, but it does have a built up downtown with plenty to walk to, shopping in town, etc.).

I used to commute to Marlborough from Newton. Granted that was 1999 but back then there was zero traffic headed in that direction. I would just hop on the MA Pike and get off at 495. I sold a house in Hopkinton earlier this spring and did that drive a few times sometimes during rush hour and it was pretty easy. Coming from Natick one could pick up the Pike in Framingham. It would all depend on where in Marborough you need to get to. There are plenty of "back road" alternatives as well.

My husband, and I and our family would like to move back to New England after being gone for 21 years. We currently live in the mid west and are eager to leave. Being from Maine and VT and having lived in Derry, NH and Georgetown, may we are well aware of the potential horrible commute into Boston for work however still have one in high school so that is a priority. We are considering Middleton MA or topsfield. Any thoughts?

What we really need is a support group for those who have already moved here!

Where are the jobs? Boston isn't the nexus for a lot of things anymore, different suburban areas are.

Middleton and Topsfield are in the Masconomet regional district along with Boxford, which is one of the best in the area. Because it pulls resources from three rather affluent towns, it offers a big selection of clubs, sports, and electives. Middleton has a lot of shopping along route 114. It's at the intersection of 114, route 1 and 95. Topsfield is a little further up route 95. They are both rather rural and offer larger lots, with more privacy and often abutting the woods.

Here is an interesting article about Masconomet High School, and how it's high on the list of college admissions.

There are no jobs for unskilled and blue collar people in massachusetts. This state is only for college grads who have connections and experience. As you know, college grad job competition is ferocious. Massachusetts doesn't call itself "the #1 state for education" for nothing. I am tired of the favoritism coming from the old fart crowd and the minority tribes taking over the northeast part of the state. I may be young but my advice, don't come here. Just like buying a house, looks good at first, but when you get in you hate it.

If you aren't a nepotistic elitist, you are most likely homeless or on the unemployment benefits/food stamp/welfare dole. We are California's little brother, basically.

This is a nepotistic state. Good for the elitists, bad for joe blow.

MA might be liberal, but I don't compare it to California one bit. I think theres jobs in MA in the right areas and for the natives of the state. For out of towners, the MA economy probably won't look so good though.. It does survive always though and the born and raised do get jobs if they know where to look. I personally can't wait to move back. I've lived many places, the west coast, FL.. I seen enough to know that MA is not as bad and the overall culture is one of the greatest in the nation.

I've lived here since age 20, and have not seen this elitist thing except in its own circles, which every area has.
I was just reading the other day that high-skilled manufacturing is growing in Massachusetts (although not in the numbers of lower-skilled jobs that left decades ago- shoes, textiles).
Who are these "minority tribes in the northeast?" Huh?
