We are making the move to Lanesboro next month. We just spent a few days in Pittsfield, and decided on Lanesboro based on schools. I don't know why, but I was kind of surprised to learn that Pittsfield has gangs -- I know many cities do, but I guess I have been pretty removed from the tags and the shootings (some guy shot 3 people there a few days ago) here in mid-coast Maine. I'm sure it's not a huge problem. The SE neighborhood looked by far the best, at least in our opinion, but we obviously didn't see it all.

I just moved to the SE area, off route 20 near downtown. Nice area, not a sign of anything bad around here at all. Quiet at night, except for a train now and then. My daughter is going to an "A" rated school. I figure if we don't like it here, we can always move...

I lived in Cummington for 4 years and my grandparents still live there. Its very country-like, no one around to bother you, you and nature basically. Its nice, but its just far away from everything... well like 40 minutes away from more popularized towns. And the Berkshires get a tonnnnnnnnnn of snow, i know that. I hate snow so i would never live there... its also like 10-15 degrees colder up there. I mean i guess if you like to feel separated from people and away from buisnesses, berkshires are good. Theyre great for retired people who dont have to worry about getting out of their driveway for work during a snow storm.

There was a lovely article in the New York Times Escapes section about Ashfield.
