Default Work in Brockton and Cambridge- decent rental?

Good chance we will be moving back to the Greater Boston Area. Looks like Brockton Hospital for one of us and Cambridge for the other. Need a decent place to rent. It would be nice if we could get to Cambridge on public transit. We have a four year old so schools will be a concern, although moving again in a year would also be a possibility. Safe matters but price also matters as it looks like we will move with a house still on the market(VT).
Thanks,
Gregg
