Northampton is very nice and not far from Amherst. I'd suggest looking there.

About the only place to stay there which has any kind of "atmosphere" is the Lord Jeffery Inn right on Amherst Common. Other than that it's chain motels along Route 9, and oh yeah, the Campus Center Hotel in the middle of the UMass campus.
The Hotel Northampton is on the "elegant" side with prices to match. There are also some B & B's in the area.
I can think of two very good reasons why this guy can't stay at the gf's place. She might live with her parents; and, even if "the folks" aren't an issue an upscale hotel suite or cozy B & B would make for a nice environment to - uh - get reacquainted in.

I would agree that the Hotel Northampton is very nice. The problem with most of the hotels in Amherst (including the one I mentioned) is that they are along Rt 9 which is not a very pretty area - its a very "commercial" area, where all the stores are (Target, Walmart, etc); not a nice are for walking. The Hotel Northampton on the the other hand is in a nicer area, near the center of Northampton.

I've stayed at the Lord Jeffrey Inn and it's very nice. I remember it being in a quiet bucolic area near the Amherst College campus, and not on a commercial strip.

If you can't afford the Lord Jeffrey Inn (which IS fairly quiet & nice, but expensive), then try the Campus Center Hotel--not that quaint, but when I went there yrs. ago, the thick cement walls kept out MOST noise, the rooms were sparse, but clean & modern, and it's right in the middle of the fun on campus! There's also a huge student store on the bottom floor, as well as cafeterias and the Information center.
Here is an OVERALL website for finding hotels and inns around Amherst.
http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/amher...achusetts.html
It has a map, which is helpful.
Regarding The Campus Center Hotel (At Umass), it is probably one of the most convenient options, though not “quaint” or cheap—but steill not as expensive as some!
For more information call, 1.877.822.2110
You can get more information & reserve a room at: http://www.aux.umass.edu/hotel/
I went there and the lowest price room for one is $120.00. Maybe you can split it with your girlfriend? My boyfriend and I used to stay there, years ago, after final exams…but it’s all remodeled and SO much nicer now!
You should REALLY check out their site; the list of amenities is impressive! There’s free parking and you can get bus tickets right there. They also have continental breakfasts and free high-speed Internet access.
The Birches – They’re in a fairly quiet part of town, south of the center, in a regular house. Their rate starts at $95.00
Their website is: http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/massachusetts-amherst-birches-b-b.html
(there was only a picture of the outside, not the rooms, which is odd).
The Allen House Inn and B&B is right IN Amherst, and across from Emily Dickinson’s home. It’s a beautiful Victorian but on a rather busy street. Their URL is www.allenhouse.com
I took a look and it’s fairly expensive ($75-195 per night!). Compared to most of the other places, this isn’t bad (the $75.00 rate, anyway!).
The Ivory Creek B&B in Hadley, is gorgeous, but rooms START at $190 per night!
In Amherst itself, there is the Ivy House Bed & Breakfast. Its location (Sunset Court) is not quaint or quiet and is near several dormitories.
This might appeal to you:
The Delta Organic Farm Bed and Breakfast, Amherst.
Here is their contact info:
352 East Hadley Road
Amherst, MA01002
Phone: 413-253-1893
This area is very pretty, with open fields and easy access to the center of Amherst. But there were no pictures or reviews.
There IS also the Amherst Motel, very close to the center of Amherst, but it’s neither quaint, nor in a quiet spot.

I think South Hadley has at least one student-oriented hotel, for Mt. Holyoke families.
Otherwise, I'd suggest a Bed and Breakfast in a nearby town such as Sunderland, South Deerfield (I'm sure there are many in Northampton, but then you have to fight the awful traffic on Route 9! )--All of these towns are on the Five-College bus route. Look on the Pioneer Valley's tourist info site, and on Amherst's web-page.
