Westboro Speedway Share Your Stories!
I remember going to the speedway as a kid and how we could hear the cars whizzing around the track on summer nights, even miles away where we lived, close to downtown.
Who else remembers going to the races and maybe you even raced there....
Share your stories!! The town has changed SO much hasn't it?

Oh my gosh, does that bring back memories! Onion rings and beer. Hanging with the guys in "the pit". Watching the demo derbies. Yeah, I know it's a little trashy but it was fun as a teenager! I hear they used to have some pretty raucious concerts back in the day as well. Too bad it's a Stop & Shop parking lot now.
Where did you live downtown? Did you go to WHS?

I lived in Westboro, graduated in 87. We lived on Old Colony Dr.
Do you still live nearby? We live in Sherborn but still have family in Westboro. The town is so different now. Remember when Uhlmans was a farm, and the hill behind the ice cream stand was just used for sledding instead of big home development. There are still parts of town that are really pretty but I hate the builtup areas and the chain restaurants. Sabatinis is still in town though and I think still has the best pizza. :-)

Sabatini's wasn't there when I was a kid. My mom owned the first pizza/sub shop in town. I went to school with Donny Uhlman. Don't know what happened to him. I have no family left there. I live on Cape Cod now and never really go to Webo... don't think I've been there in 14-15 years now.
I remember when Old Colony Dr. was being built! hahahaha My parents almost had a house built there, but decided to be closer to town because of their many businesses.
Where is Sabatini's?

If you're going from the rotary and heading toward the reservoir Sabatini's is on your right (across from Don Jernberg's shop).

hahaha There was no Don Jernberg's shop either...don't know who he is.
If you go around the rotary and head towards the resevoir, that is South St. My dad owned the first office building on your left, then not the next, but then the next 3 buildings. There's a restaurant there now. It was my dads dry cleaning plant first, then next to it (24 South St.) was mom's pizza/sub shop, next to that was the laundromat he owned. In the early 70's they closed the dry cleaning plant and gutted the inside and opened a restaurant. After a year or two of the restaurant being open they closed the pizza shop (which my mom had owned for over 10 years), and turned that building into a saloon. It was connected to the restaurant. Then the laundromat, then their driveway and parking lot. Next to that was a smelting business and down behind them was the DPW. If you kept going down the street, there was a hair salon (this is all on the left), then Don's Donuts. That was on the corner. Pass that street was a barroom... Moynihan's. It was a real dive. There was a rooming house upstairs.
My dad owned a lot of RE in town back then. He was well known. He semi-retired from biz and became a Deputy Sheriff. He finally retired fully at 47 and moved to Florida.

Racing is still alive in Massachusetts
While Westboro, Norwood and others are gone there is still some exciting racing to be seen. Whipcityspeedway.com (Westfield) has dirt microsprints which my son races all spring, summer and into the fall. Today these cars, with newer technology are faster than ever. A fun night out for the family. Hope to see you there!
