Default Another question about Amherst

In the summertime, where do people go swimming? I know Amherst is near the Berkshires, but is there somewhere even closer that people frequent? Thanks!

You don't have to go to the Berkshires to go swimming. There are a number of ponds, etc. close by. Puffer's Pond is a popular one right outside Amherst.

During the '80s, and probably still, a popular place to go was the Swift River along Route 9 in Cummington. (Not a bad pun - it's the actual name of the town, lol.) Being car-less at the time I lived in the Valley, I never made it out there m'self. But it was said to be a place where skinny-dipping went on. Even if there wasn't any truth to that and wilder rumors, the area is part of a state forest and is cool and well-shaded. I second the reco for Puffers Pond.
You might also check with the local colleges, since they may offer passes or even free access to townies during the summer to their indoor pools.

I second both of those suggestions. You can also go swimming out by the glacial potholes in Shelburne.
