Is part of the reason you're settling on CT and MA because gay marriage is legal? I know it's inspiring to a lot of people, but keep in mind large sections of CT and MA are conservative. You'll have to choose carefully.

I've lived in Allston, Acton, Concord, Bedford and Westford. I wouldn't call any of those towns unfriendly, but I'd have to say the friendliest-feeling to me was Bedford. There were many family-type events, schools that were walkable to many parts of town, and a lively ice cream stand/teenage-hangout in Bedford Farms.
And it has catnip for liberals: a Whole Foods Market and a huge Unitarian Universalist church.
I also liked that it was just far enough from Boston to be convenient to more rural areas, but close enough to be an easy drive into the city (not at rush hour, of course).

I think this post has been taken a bit too seriously...there really are no distinguishing towns or cities that are more or less friendly than any other.

"Friendly" is subjective. What is considered friendly in one part of the country can be seen as in your face in another...particularly in the North East. There are communities that are more family oriented and active, but friendly neigborhoods are hit and miss. The personalities of Mass towns are all over the board. Swampscott and Revere are almost neighboring and could not be more different. I find that the pace is fast and many people socialize through family, work and long established relationships.
I love Mass, but it's not that friendly....But I agree, Concord Ma is beautiful...($500?)
If you can move anywhere, I would look at Charleston, SC, beaches, historic & from what my research finds... very friendly...and your $500 will buy you one beautiful home.

1979, I beg to differ! Every town has a different personality, and friendliness and openness to newcomers is definitely in the mix.
A general rule of thumb is the richer the community, the more miserably people behave toward each other. That applies to all 50 states.

I have thought about the South but to be honest, as much as i love that Southern Hospitality... I don't think we could fit in. We aren't church goers and we are very liberal. Not a lot of either going around down there. (I know because I have family from there so I have visited often).

Based on your political leanings, I think you'd like the area of Western MA known as the "Five Colleges Area." The area is centered around Amherst, Northampton, and Hadley. But as for friendliness, you'd have to consult someone who lives in the area.
