Default Leaving Boston!

Leaving Boston to Michigan or North Carolina, no jobs for nurses!..... of all professions, why in the hell can't I find a hospital job for myself, I can't afford to work in a nursing home, I just can't!... With my Northeastern Degree and a 3.75 gpa, I thought people were going to be throwing jobs at me, I guess, I was wrong, packing my bags and leaving Boston!

N/B
What a great Poem!

and you're assuming you'll find a job in another state during a major recession because..... if you couldn't get yourself a job in Boston (and no, even as a nurse, no one will be "throwing jobs" at you. you do still have to search for them), what makes you think you'll find them in other states? it's a recession, any guarantees that may have been in place before are likely gone

and it's pretty dumb to make a major move w/o a job lined up during these times, IMO

So much for the nursing shortage! I guess 8 years of evil nutjobs running the country into the ground took care of that one too!

I say if you don't like Boston, leave. I don't much like it either....

Good luck, as I understand it, no matter what the economy does, RN's will find paying work.

Did you tell your interviewers about your Northwestern Degree and GPA? Did you make it clear you expected people to throw jobs at you?

Confidence is wonderful, brash, new college grad arrogance - not so much.

Good luck in your job search. Remember, interviewers, patients and coworkers won't care about your alma mater or GPA. It's your skills and compassion during time of crisis they will be looking for.

I'm sorry.... That must be so disappointing. I have a friend who's been searching for a job in public heath for some time now and she has FINALLY found something part time--after not working for over a year. Even my doctor friends are taking part time jobs.

And I would love to believe that all nurses are compassionate, but as one who has been hospitalized a few times too many, some of them are just plain evil!

Did you independently research opportunities in nursing, or just take word of mouth and college recruiting jargon? I ask because the "nursing shortage" has been a myth for several years. There are shortages in specific specialties... but not overall. There are small, rural, or low performing hospitals that can't get nurses, but that is do to pay or lack of benefits, or crappy working conditions.

In case you hadn't noticed, there is a recession right now. I know of very few new grads in ANY field finding jobs, and many people who had jobs in "secure" fields are finding themselves unexpectedly unemployed.

Lighten up guys. Where's the satisfaction in tormenting someone already in pain? You all are just telling the OP something they ALREADY KNOW--people can't find jobs now.

Hope someone's nicer to you when/if you're in the same situation.

I have heard that the economy and taxes are really bad in Michigan right now. You may want to take that one off your list. Before you go anywhere, you might want to check the Internet job web sites. You should also speak to the people that are looking for nurses. Big city areas tend to be very popular with medical people looking for work. You're more likely to find a lot of competition for jobs in those areas.

The area I have picked to move to has a median income of only about $23,000. But you can buy a nice house for about $60,000 and the tax rate is very low. One company there was looking for an RN and were offering $36,000. In most areas that would be a very low salary for an RN but here, it is well above the median income.

I get so annoyed when I keep hearing health care is one of the areas of job growth with opportunity. The OP is exactly right! Almost all hospitals have highering freezes; specifically in the Boston, Worcester and Providence areas. Also, hospitals have a low admittance rate right now, many people are loosing their insurance and are avoiding surgury procedures as long as possible.

Imagine, in order to be accepted into a health care program at a college, you must pass all your pre-reqs. Then you are thrown into a pool of other applicants, all vying for the same openings. Since there are at least 10 appicants applying for only one opening, you must have a 4.0 (usually) to get in. Then once you get in, you must maintain at least a 3.0 to stay (it used to be 2.0). Then once you graduate you might have to move to an area of the country with a nursing shortage, where they are highering.

I have to agree with the comment above about low admittance. I am a very regular customer at a Boston hospital and last week it was so quiet at both branches it was almost eerie. A receptionist said that this happens sometimes and in a couple of days it will pick up again. I hope so.
