Used Book Stores...
In Austin, we have a lot of 'half Price Books' bookstores. http://halfpricebooks.com They are essentially a chain store that has a HYOOgE amount of used books, in every genre. Is there anything like that up here? I am not looking for rare books, or a hole-in-the-wall shop that is heavily weighted towards the owners personal interests. I need something larger, as I need to stock up on some cookbooks, business/personal development titles, kids books, and of course, trashy historical romances....

I can't think off hand of book stores but try Building 19 and Ocean State Job Lot. Both have book sections and I've found some great titles for short money.

I'd also try Annie's Book Swap. They're not huge but you can find good stuff there:
Annies Book Stop. Also, I'm not sure where you live but I have heard in some towns on the cape the local post office has a book swap.

Hie thee to Boston Book Annex, on the north side of Beacon St between Park Drive and Saint Mary's St (near the border of Brookline.) It sprawls across the ground level of two rowhouses and has shelves' worth of books in just about every conceivable category. You could spend over an hour just browsing the cartsful of $1-3 selections that are placed outside in good weather. And if you're a cat person, in-house feline Guthrie craves attention and rewards it with a generous tongue bath of the hands while his comrade Wakefield is on the shy side.
Rodney's, on Mass. Ave in Cambridge's Central Square and along Beacon St in Brookline on the western fringe of Coolidge Corner, is also worth checking out (so to speak.)
The Book Rack (?) on Medford St in Arlington Center isn't much more than a hole in the wall, but carries a generous supply of paperbacks in good condition of which much is of the "bodice-ripper" variety. After you've read a book you've purchased there, you can even return it for credit on your next buy.
The Harvard Book Store in Cambridge's square of the same name (on Mass. Ave headed toward Central Square) has "nothing but used" in its sprawling cellar.
Hook 'em, 'horns! Keep Austin weird!

Some antique malls have used book sections, like the two group antique shops in Waltham on Felton St. And there's a used book store in Waltham called More Than Words on Moody St. The Bryn Mawr Bookstore on Huron Ave. in Cambridge is very good.
Otherwise, for discounted new books and remainders, I highly recommend The New England Mobile Book Fair on Needham St. in Newton. If you go, check out the Farm Grill Restaurant. It's a Greek place with amazing fresh grilled chicken and lamb gyros. Real roasted lamb, not the pressed lamb product sold at other places.
