Western Mass bear
Hi, were looking for some wildlife viewing in Ma. There is a resonable black bear population but its hard to determine where in western Mass we should look. Any ideas?

Maybe this page and the other black bear links on this site will help you out. Good luck and be safe!

Look in the Berkshires We lived in Souteast Pittsfield and saw bears quite often. Sometimes traveling through the woods around Lenox we'd see them as well. This time of year they probably aren't out and about yet. Give it a few weeks and watch out for mama with cubs!

i used to live in florence, which is basically in northampton (its like a little suburb of northampton) and i used to see bears allll the time. like a lot of the time. cubs, mama bears, everywhere. Its not always a good thing.. they can be quite a nuisance going through your garbage and making little kids run inside their houses. i had a friend who had her little dog taken by a black bear and she had to watch the dog get mutilated and killed. she lived in northampton. there are lots around here but its not always good.

Lots of bears in the Berkshires, they are "harvested" (ok, let's use the real word - killed) at the rate of about 60-100 a year. Most die from hunters guns, but some are hit by cars, especially along Route 7 in New Ashford.
I don't think "viewing" bears is considered very wise, either.

Actually, when out hiking I am usually hoping not to see any bears. There are quite a few in the Berkshires, and once in a while a car will hit one on the more remote roads. Last Fall one was hit on Route 7 not far from Mount Greylock.
