There are "extended stay" hotels in the Winter St/128 area that would probably be your best bet. For complete listings visit tripadvisor.com.
If "we" doesn't include children, you might want to tour around the city's south side along and surrounding Moody St and also east of the train station following River St. There are many older apartment buildings and rooming houses in that vicinity, as well as the upscale-priced Cronin's Landing complex. Although the area appears worn down it's quiet along the side streets and relatively safe. Probably it wouldn't be too hard to find a place which allows tenancy at will (no lease.) My not being keen on the neighborhood for kids is due to traffic levels on Moody and River St's and the occasional speeder elsewhere, also the lack of yard space for play.
