40 is somewhat young, and do you wish to work? I vote for JP, the pond area, to start out!
Rent and enjoy, then do decide. Cape Cod, No! You may visit, but at 40, no way!

North End, right in the City of Boston. Atlantic Ave is where it's at.

The North End for someone who wants to be active outdoors? Are you kidding? A more citified and lousy parking/traffic area would be hard to find.

My wife, 6yr.old daughter and I are moving to Miami in a bout eight weeks.
We live in Belmont, MA. Belmont is next to Cambridge and Boston.
Belmont has some of the best public K, Middle and High Schools in the State.
We are about 10-15 drive from Boston.
You may want to consider this town especially since you have kids

If money wasn't a problem I'd move back to Marblehead & get a condo on the harbor. Otherwise I'd probably move to Salem.

If you only want to party and be surrounded by culture and don't mind horrible traffic, I'd say: "Boston"! But since you want night life AND the outdoors, there's no place like Western Mass. Also, being from California, I am merely guessing you're more liberal than than not, so again, W. Mass is much more easygoing in that regard than some of the semi-rural towns in Eastern or Central MA.
The North Shore is nice, but limited culturally. Save it for trips to the Crane's or Good Harbor beach in summer! The Connecticut River Valley is an athlete's paradise. There are bike trails (both on and off-road), hiking, canoeing & kayaking, swimming, hang-gliding...you name it! Also, you can be in downtown Northampton, catching a movie, blues band or having a great dinner, only 30 minutes after some great skiing in the Berkshires or VT.
There are the Five Colleges (incl. UMass) as well as several smaller ones, with many adult ed. courses, art galleries, museums, etc. I know many people who lived in Boston or Manhattan, loved the culture and amenities (like open-air cafes, fresh bagels & coffee on a weekend morning and local breweries), but couldn't afford the price; they all love it here!
Also, there are many older singles, due to the many professors and other educators in the area, not to mention "old" hippies who settled here after graduating college and couldn't bear to leave (I'm one...though not single).
Take a drive out here and spend a few days. Bring your bicycle!
