Default Finding Boulder in New England

I'm looking to move from Boston to a smaller town (roughly the size of Boulder, CO). I've visited Boulder and liked the atmosphere and vibe. Does anyone have recommendations on New England towns that are similar? I was thinking Amherst might be a good choice.

Other criteria:

nearby colleges
liberal
outdoorsy
friendly
artsy

Thanks!

Amherst fits your criteria, but the one thing you'll never find in Mass (or New England) is weather like Boulder.

How big is Boulder?

Would Portland, Maine be too large?

Burlington, VT is VERY similar to Boulder. Same liberal vibe, many outdoor activities, Pearl Street (Boulder) and Church Street (Burlington) were designed by the same person, both towns have the state's premier public universities, etc.
Another similar place would be Northampton, MA.

Burlington, Northampton, and Portland are the best bets. They are all liberal and outdoorsy but VERY small (Portland is the largest at 63,000 people). If that's too small, look at Providence, a little less outdoorsy than the other smaller cities, but it's liberal, has a bunch of colleges, artsy and nice. All of those would work.

Definately Burlington. This is the closest thing to Boulder you will find in NE. similar vibe, outdoorsy, large state University, small liberal city, Skiing, Hippies. although it is further from Montreal (the nearest big city) than Boulder is from Denver.

Why not Burlington MA?! Come on, there's so much in common! Like... well, they both begin with "B" and... ummm... other stuff.

Seriously, Burlington (VT) is probably the best bet given the university and immediate access to outdoor activities. It's on a beautiful lake and has a very vibrant little downtown area. If Burlington's too big (it won't be at about 30,000 people), check out Northampton... if Burlington's too small, Portland ME.

Such as, they both end with "urlington"

Two peas in a pod, like South Boston, Mass. and South Boston, Va.
