Default Young Couple relocating near northern MA

My girlfriend and I are relocating over to the East Coast from Seattle & San Diego... we were looking for somewhere to live in-between Portsmouth, NH and Waltham (Hanscom), MA. So far it sounds like Andover would be a good place, but we were looking for any other suggestions. Peabody? Somewhere that's less than 45 minutes away from Waltham since my girlfriend will be working there. I'll be working in Portsmouth.

We're still young so we're looking for a place that maybe has a nice park and some things to do (coffee shops, etc.)

Any suggestions? Thanks!

How about Salem? It's a fun city with lots to do and should be a reasonable commute both ways.

I'm a bit confused- Waltham (Hanscom)? Hanscom AFB is nowhere near Waltham. It's in Bedford, well off the I-95/128 routes for Portsmouth and Waltham.
I concur that Salem (MA, not NH) might well be the only place in-between that is a bit urbane.

I drive and hour-and-a-half one-way commute from Pepperell to Gloucester EVERY day and would SUGGEST that for your wife's sanity you try to avoid living where she must drive back and forth on Route 128 during commuter rush hour (read: 7AM-9AM and 3PM-6PM). You'll be fine going back and forth to Portsmouth because you'll be going in the opposite directions of most commuters.

We rented a home in the Annisquam section of Gloucester, last year, and while it was GREAT for me (5 minute commute) it was horrendous for my wife who works in Framingham.

You nailed it: Peabody. 95 North to Portsmouth for you. Reverse commute. Should take you 45 min. Life will suck for your wife, no matter what. If you choose Andover, you will go 495 north to 95. Again about 45 min, but your wife's angst will be compounded by fighting with commuters on rte 93, then 128.

Salem, Ma. is not as nice as Peabody or Andover, and not convenient to ANY major highway.

Thanks! I'll definitely be looking more closely into Peabody when I arrive there in July. Sounds like the commute for the lady will be a little rough, but I think we'll manage.
