Default Young married couple moving to Cape Cod

My husband just got a job in Brewster MA and we will be relocating there from the Florida Keys. I was wondering on any suggestions as to where to live and work. We are in our late 20's and would like to be around other people our age. We hope to have children in the next few years and possibly buy a house. Coming from the Keys we know how it is to live in a small seasonal area. I am a hairstylist and will be looking for a great upscale salon where I can have a year round clientel. We are looking for a town that has a young population with affordable housing and an easy commute to Brewster.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Any suggestions on any particlular salons would be great too!
Thanks

How wonderful! My folks have a place in Brewster and we absolutely love it. There's tons to do: Bike path, great bookstore, beautiful beaches, great hiking trails and ponds, nice camping sites, antique shops, fun general store, lots of community activities, baseball games, outdoor concerts, etc. However, I would say it would be tough to find year round clientelle at a hair salon in town. It gets really quiet there during the off-season. I suspect the larger areas like Falmouth would be more bustling (relatively) throughout the year. My understanding is that Sandwich has a decent school system compared to many parts of the Cape but I don't have firsthand experience there. Prices are not what I'd call economical there but perhaps coming from Key West it'll seem fine.

Check out the Harwich, Dennis, Brewster areas for places to live. Lots of guys where I work (in Wellfleet) live in the Harwich area and they seem to like it.

The Cape has an older population. Does your husband's workplace have any younger people who can make suggestions for you?

As far as hair salons, I honestly can't give help on Cape but I do know that Charles David up in Hanover (formerly in Hingham) is a very large, successful salon. They have recently been named exclusive vendors for Plymouth Rock Studios. It's a good 40 minute ride from the Sagamore Bridge but I do know the stylists there do very well. It's my understanding even during this downturn, they continue to prosper.

In regard to your future plans, Nauset is usually ranked number 1 with Sandwich number 2 on the Cape for schools. We live in Sandwich and love it. The schools are well supported here and parent involvement is impressive. They do offer many social things for parents and children.

Congratulations to you and your hubby Katie! And welcome to Cape Cod and Brewster in particular! I have lived in Brewster for 30 years. I moved here from 30 miles west of Boston when I was 22.

There are a couple salons in Brewster that are able to provide you year round employment and a good opportunity to build up your clientele.

I owned a hair and tanning salon in Orleans (next to Brewster) for 9 years and it's still owned by the gal who bought it from me.

Send me a DM and I'll be happy to provide you with more reliable and accurate information on our town than people not living in it.

Again, welcome! I'm sure you'll find it a wonderful place to live and raise your family in the future!!

Charles Davis Salon in Hanover is a good hour and 20 minutes from Brewster without traffic. You'll start seeing traffic going to Boston in Marshfield so that will probably add another 15 minutes every day. Not a good commute from Brewster. However, Sandwich is probably a good suggestion. It's right off the Sagamore Bridge so you can get to Hanover in 35 min and Brewster in 35 minutes. It's also only an hour from Boston. I wouldn't send my kids to Nauset. A lot of hicks! Sandwich has much more of a suburban feel with the beauty of Cape Cod!

If you're living in the Brewster area, you may want to look at salons in Barnstable/Hyannis. Probably more of a year round clientele.
Welcome to Cape Cod!

Katiea,

Hoping you made out alright. Finding young couples your (our) age will be a bit tough in this area - lower cape. The younger crowds seems to be seasonal. A very small percent are born and raised here. We are in our late twenties and have been here for four years. We find ourselves hanging with an older crowd, late thirties to forties, and have had a tough time finding younger families. We just had a baby in December and are the one and only of the group. We are in Chatham (very small older town) I think your best bet would be Harwich or Orleans. Harwich being the most reasonable for real estate.
Good Luck!

Default Brewster or Chatham

I would suggest Brewster or Chatham

Brwester has a small country village feel - with more of a spread out business area over route 6A with restaurants, antique shops, a general store, etc. -

Chatham has more of a centralized downtown and is quite charming. There's Nickerson State Park Nearby, Monomoy Island Refuge, Nauset Beach iN orleans, the bay-side beaches in brewster with beautiful sunsets and such-

I guess it depends ifyou want to be on the bay side with a house with aview of the sunsets and the ocean ---which would be great for an ocean-view home in Brewster--

or Chatham with its more town-feel with the town center and such - with shops, restaurants, and all that

Chatham has great seafood restaurants, some ocean-side beaches---and bike trail which connects with the cape cod rail trail and nickerson park for recreation

its a very nice area. - lots of B+B's and hotels in the area if you get visitors.

Dennis , Harwich, and orleans are also nice

Brewster-and Harwich also have some kettle pond areas that have a secluded feel to them more country woods type living ---in the central parts of the town

Long pond is a particularly nice area

Hope this helps

I dont know if Ocean Edge golf course allows people to buy homes there--but you might look into it ---

By living at Brewster-Chatham -Harwich area you'd be right in the middle of the action 20-30 min from Provincetown and 20-30 min from the Bridges..

Enjoy
