The Atwater neighborhood right near Bay State is really nice.

City2007Data,
Springfield is by far one of the worst towns in mass. to live in aand longmeadow, agawam, or west springfield are not the only suburbs to look at!
Granby, Suffield, or Ellington in CT are excellent towns with a decent commute to Springfield,Ma. Unlike what you said, these communities have rather low cost of living- almost equivalent to Springfield area! (They are rural, but have big box stores nearby: vernon, manchester, windsor etc.)

I guess it's all a matter of taste. Some people like cowtowns in Connecticut, some don't. Being close to a Wal-mart in the middle of nowhere, Connecticut doesn't make a place a great place to live.

I did not mean literally right in the town. What I was saying is that there are some big stores in a 5-10 mile radius outside the town. Any way- did you get my message/ do you have any info. on Cheshire,CT?
Sincerely,
Sri

i agree, i am from the lesser of the area, high st., mason square, plainfield, state st., WORTHINGTON AVE.. I was born and raised in springfield. It is a wonderful place to live and has a wonderful climate, just stay away from the hot spots. It's simple, if you are on carew by cumberland farms or just before mercy, it is generally not a bad area, but just be careful. Do not go looking for trouble, just like any other major city. If you walk in to a humble home with your nose up! No one will welcome you. Meaning dont be a closed minded individual, alot of people coment on what the do not understand. baystate hospital is one of the finnest in all of NE and NY, my mother worked there, and currently works in mercy hospital. the are one of the only trauma one centers in the area an constantly fly patients to and from BOSTON HOSPITAL. It is a great oppourtunity congradulations. You should visit springfield for your self, rather than listen to any Moderator cut: offensive language

Please aviod pearl st. or springfield st., especially by the police station, The ATWATER neighborhood is nice, so is the HILL McKnight Colonial Neighborhood, also all of SIXTEEN ACRES and PINE POINT NEIGHBORHOODS are very nice. Homes are also generally cheap in those areas and very quite. Try EAST FOREST PARK, homes there are a little more expenssive but are verry quite and gorgeous, PLUM TREE ROAD, this is on the outskirts of the city by EAST LONGMEADOW. Also look towards INdian Orchid. Trust me visit the city an see for your self where to live.

westfield, agawam feeding hills, southwick is great small town, all these are very safe and have good schools and amenties. born and raised in this area and the onlt time i go to spfld is for baystate. the rest is less than safe. lots of shootings this year already, sure they probally did it to them selves but ill stay clear of springfield.
baystate is a great big hospital that is starting planns for a major addition. they have the money and great benifits for the employees.

As you can see, the people who say negative things about springfield are the ones that never spend any time in the city.
There's been shootings and murders in other towns around springfield too. Almost all of springfields are related to drug sales, drug sales by the way that are generated often by a lot of the people from feeding hills, longmeadow, agawam, etc., driving into springfield to purchase drugs in one or two small hotspots (mind you, the city is almost 40 square miles with many neighborhoods far nicer and far quieter than the suburbs listed throughout this string).
There's a pretty simple way to reduce your chance of getting shot. Don't buy drugs, no matter where you live. But it would be great if the many drug users of the feeding hills, agawams, longmeadows stopped feeding the drug trade and then pointing fingers at all of springfield as being the "bad place".

It is best not to generalize too much. I did work in Springfield, in one of the rough neighbourhoods and with a very at risk community. It was never unsafe, but I am urban savy, and managed to avoid hassles. I was responsible for the tri-country region from Franklin to Springfield, and the differences were enormous.
It also doesn't serve us to suggest that one way of life is better than another--I have now lived in both urban and rural areas and find each have their benefits.
And here are some crime stats Winnie posted in another Western Ma thread:
Amherst crime index= 114
HOLYOKE = 627
Springfield = 741
Northampton = 219
