Default single family home for rent??

Where am I most likely to find a single family home for rent, within a half hour commute to Hanscom AFB? Towns of interest include Lexington, Concord, Carlisle, Bedford, Lincoln, Westford, Acton, Stow, Harvard, Sudbury, Wayland. Are Groton and Ayer too far? I'd prefer a back roads commute, under $2500, preferably under $2000, need garage/basement storage space, and space for a vegetable garden, and good schools.

I've looked on craigslist and through the Boston Globe ads on line. I have yet to contact any realtors, as we've yet to sign a job contract. I have been a bit discouraged by what is available. Is it bad form to contact realtors in different towns (as they may have access to different housing stock?). Where I currently live, the realtor's fee is covered by the owner, but I've discovered that this is not always the case in the Boston area?
