Small town. Quaint. Good music scene. Lots of lesbians. Plenty of colleges nearby.

Very much so; one of the most progressive in Massachusetts (and that's saying a lot). It's similar to other progressive cities and towns throughout the U.S. It's located near a bunch of colleges and wonderful outdoor scenery. It also has the benefit of being within 2 hours of Boston. If I had to compare it to other places in the U.S., I'd say it has a similar feel to Burlington, Vermont or any other progressive town.

I love Northampton... lots of little shops, interesting restaurants, coffee places etc. Lots of pretty old houses and lots to do. Amherst which is just a short drive away, is also a fun town with a lot of different music festivals etc. I would move to either one of these towns any day. I usually visit once a month, because they have a few nice vegetarian friendly restaurants and there is a large Whole Foods in Hadley, which is in between the two towns.

And don't forget the bike path that runs from Northampton to Amherst. It's a rail to train conversion and goes right over the Connecticut River.

I think it's a great college town. And I concur with the Burlington, VT comparison.
