Is the problem three hours or three hours of driving?
As Clevedark said, if you take the bus to NYC and then transit out to Nanuet, it will be a lot longer than 3 hours. Depending on time and day, the bus to NYC alone will be 4-5 hours, plus time getting to South Station. Once in NYC, you have to take a commuter bus to Nanuet (wait time, plus the actual trip is 1-1.5 hours) or get to Penn Station and take an NJ Transit train up there (wait time, and the actual trip is an hour to an hour 20).
Amtrak, much more expensive, doesn't really save you much time either. If you can do it in less than 6.5 hours I'd be surprised, and you'd get very tired of lugging bags all over.
It's certainly not faster, and I don't think it's cheaper either (though it's hard to calcualate depreciation on the car, effect on maintenance costs, etc.).
