Default Route 53 in Hanover - why so dumpy?

Can anyone tell me with a town that is as nice as Hanover is suppose to be, why do they allow lower Rte 53 to be so dumpy looking? I think it's worse than Rte 1 in Saugus. They have so many delapitated buildings with tacky signs. The Mall is fine but once you go down the hill, it looks like a disaster area! It's embarrassing! You go into NOrwell and Pembroke and Rte 53 looks much nicer!

I believe that you are seeing the remnants of one of the old Cape routes. Before Rte. 3 was built there were a couple of roads that people used to go from Boston to Cape Cod. Route 53 was one of them along with Rte. 18 and Rte. 3A, which was the old Rte. 3. These roads had a lot of "attractions" on them for the long ride down and back. It is very similar to Rte 1 which was the only way to get to Maine before I-95 was built.
