Default Staycation - Massachusetts

Call it "DayTrippin' in MA".

Most of us are in situations these days that prevent us from taking an extended vacation (for me, that's a whole week!), and are looking for things to do a little closer to home.

DreamworksSKG composed a wonderful post about Cape Cod which I'll link to here:

Where to spend a weekend on the Cape??? - Massachusetts (MA) - Page 2 - City-Data Forum

I'm sure, though, that there are many others here who have a lot of information to offer on "staycations" in their own areas. Western MA? Merrimack Valley/Southern NH? Worcester area? Just to name a few. Little known attractions that cost little to no money? Even if the attractions are inexpensive, we'll usually spend money on a restaurant, ice cream parlor, etc.

It just makes sense to keep our tourist dollars in MA. Post your ideas and bring some business to your local area!

Thanks much!

Thanks so much for sharing this Cathy - and reminding us of all the great things to do, right in our own backyard! :-)

Maybe all the things that people used to think of for weekends? Tanglewood/Berkshires. Boston touristy things- Duck Tours, Freedom Trail, the Esplanade, the waterfront. An afternoon on Charles Street and see what's going on at the Common. Museums. I mean, people come here from all over for these things, and here they are, our local entertainment.
Fruitlands. Walden Pond. Louisa May Alcott House.
Great reminder to buy and spend locally! Great farmstands, and they usually carry specialty pastries and bread made by local cottage industries. Produce might be pricier, but oh, does it hold up! I bought spinach at the local farmstand that lasted fresh for two weeks- no way that could happen in a supermarket. And that flax bread made by a person in Woburn... heaven.
I think "buy local" is becoming a lot more common everywhere. I think.

How about Battleship Cove in Fall River? My son spent a night there as a Cub Scout and loved it!

A couple of nice day trips we enjoy are Tower Hill Botanical Garden, Old Sturbridge Village and the Ecotarium in Worcester.

When my kids were young, we had a family membership to Sturbridge and could go anytime we wanted, year round. There is so much to see and do in the surrounding area as well. Beautiful area.

This past Saturday I spent the afternoon at Walden Pond. It was a beautiful breezy day and just ten minutes from my house.

The Willows in Salem is nice too. They have a pier where you can go fishing as well.
