Default Stupid question: Does my central AC unit need to be serviced?

Our house has central air conditioning and there is a pretty big AC unit outside that I placed a cover on to prevent rain water and debris from damaging the unit. We don't really use the AC at all since the house for some reason is quite cool during summer (kind of lucky, I guess). I don't know how old the AC unit is, we bought the house two years ago and the AC was working fine. My question is whether I need to have my AC unit serviced, even if we don't really use it? I worry that if I don't it will stop working and break down and that we have to spend money to replace it (say if we were to sell the house). I asked my oil heat company and they service it for around $120. Should I keep it serviced regularly? If so, how frequently? Once a year? Any thoughts guys? Thanks!

I live in Houston and we use ours nearly year-round.
Basically, if you keep it clean and it doesn't look rusty or anything, and it seems to be cooling efficiently, you should have nothing to worry about. If you're in doubt you can get it serviced, but I'd shop around for a better price.
