Question lawn eating nocturnal animals

Have found 2 to 4 inch patches of lawn dug up. Suspect a nocturnal creature. Any suggestions as to what this is and how to get rid of them?

If you have grubs, it could be a skunk (they love japanese beetle grubs).

Are they cone-shaped divits (like with a golf-club), or are they flat, interconnected patches? If it's the former, it's definitely skunks. The latter, and I would say a preliminary search by a raccoon - if it's the raccoon, watch out! You could wake up to entire swaths of turf peeled back before long!
