best hospitals in southeastern mass
Hi! I have recently moved to Dartmouth, MA and am also expecting a baby at the end of October. Just wanted any recommendations for hospitals in the area with good maternity wards. Thanks.

Any hospital recommendations in Massachusetts? That would be more convenient for the family. Thanks.

Providence's Hospitals are only 25 minutes from Dartmouth.
The best hospitals in the region are in Providence and Boston. Boston has some of the best in the world and if you need treatment for anything other than a routine cut or bump, I would suggest heading up that way. My family is from the Southcoast (Assonet) and when my brother needed treatment for his A.L.L. Leukemia, he went to Dana Farber and Boston Children's in Boston. His full recovery is living proof of why no one regrets that decision.
That said, for minor stuff, we always went to Charleton in Fall River. St. Lukes (New Bedford) and St. Annes (Fall River) are also similar. They are by no means wonderful facilities, but they get the job done for basic treatment. I have found that the E.R. and outpatient facilities at Charleton are a notch above the others (St. Lukes and St. Anne's). For that reason I would go with Charleton for basic treatment and put up with the commute to Boston or Providence for anything moderately specialized.
A good resource for Southcoast Hospitals is the Southcoast Health System website
hope that helps a bit, good luck!

If the hospitals in Boston are out of the question then I would suggest South Shore Hospital in Weymouth. I have only heard real good things about their maternity dept. A few friends and my niece delivered their children there. This hospital has come a long way in the past decade or so. I'd stay away from St. Lukes...just my opinion...some people might have great feelings toward it.
lrfox: That's awesome about your brother. I just finished treatment at Dana Farber...great great place. Saved my life.

Brigham and Women's is a great hospital too. That is where my kids were born! One of the top 10 in the country.

 MGH is #5
Brigham and Women's #10
Having been in healthcare for over 30 years, I would agree that Women and Infant's is a great OB/GYN hospital in close proximity to Dartmouth. I think Charleton or St. Lukes are fine for for routine things. Miriam Hospital in Providence is a Magnet Hospital and offers top notch cardiology/cardiology surgical care as well as having the largest/best outpatient oncology department in RI. If I were seriously ill with something out of the ordinary, I would head to Boston. I went to nursing school at MGH and grad school (NP) at Northeastern. I moved to NC 15 months ago and currently work at Duke, which is tied for 10th place with Brigham and Women's.

It's too far to drive to Boston from Cape Cod or SE Mass especially if you're going to have a baby. Highly recommend South Shore Hospital in Weymouth.
