Pittsfield is the "city" and is about a half hour from Lenox and 45 minutes or so from Great Barrington. It's where the "big" museums are and the prime outlet mall is, but since there is SO much to do where I am (Great Barrington) I rarely go up that way ( the towns near me are more of that small town thing...think Norman Rockwell - whose museum is in Stockbridge, actually). Yes, lots of horseback riding, mountain biking - not sure where they'd do whiteriver rafting...There is a big lake there, where you rent daysailers, but we went with people that belonged to it...I don't know if they have day rates for vacationers.

WHen do you head out this way?

Is your free vacation from touring a timeshare. We did that a while ago and actually enjoyed the resort.

Try a day trip to Bish/Bash falls just outside of Great Berington on the NY border, for horseback riding....try Aspinwall stables (they have dinner rides) in Lenox right on Rt 7,picnic at Tangelwood, even drive up Rt 7 to Bennington Vermont and hit the "Grand Ma Mose's " museum or drive to the top ...or hike to the summit of Mt Greylock.

Downtown Great Barrington (where I grew up) has the best collection of resturants and shopping (including 2 great toy stores) in the Berkshires. The Trustees of Reservations have a good hike up Mounument Mountain in Great Barrington right on Rt 7 between Stockbridge and GB.

Heading out of GB on Rt 23 West there's a split for Rt 71 that takes you by the local airport. Maybe do a short sightseeing flight of MA, CT and NY?

About an hour northeast of Pittsfield on Rt2 is Zoar Outdoor that may have some of the outdoor adventure you're seeking:
Directions to Zoar Outdoor in Charlemont, MA - Zoar Outdoor

On your last day you could leave Pittsfield in the AM, go to Zoar for the day, and keep heading east to Rt 91 to head home.

Jiminy Peak, north of Pittsfield off Rt 7 is another ski area with some summer options:

Adventure can be found in the Berkshires (I had no idea about the summer stuff going on at Catamount, for example), but the industry is not nearly as built-up there as it might be elsehwere. The Housatonic River, the main river in the area was polluted with PCBs by GE decades ago, so we lost a real gem of a resource (methinks it's ok for canoes/kayaks, but not swimming nor fishing).

Go to Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony, 365 acres on rolling hills. Lenox is a beautyfull town. The Sunday brunch at the Dakota on the Lenox/Pittsfield line can not be beat! There's so much to do if you love the arts. Relax, and enjoy, There is also a great Mexican resturant in Great Barrington. I would check that out.
