Milton, MA -Really The 7th Best Place To Live In The US?
Once again the Mrs. & I are looking at places we are not too familiar with and have stumbled upon Milton, MA.
We found a cute home off of Blue Hills Parkway and about a mile from the Mattapan line.
Any advice about this area would be really appreciated.

I hardly agree that Milton is the 7th nicest town in the USA. If you're liking the South Shore, I'd pick these towns (in this order)
- Cohasset
- Scituate
- Duxbury
- Hingham
- Norwell
- Hanover
- Milton
- Marshfield
- Pembroke
- Kingston
- Hanson
- Abington
- Whitman
- Rockland

Milton's not the South Shore. Milton is more like Brookline or Newton: an immediately adjacent city suburb - though much less public transport than the other two, so less of a "streetcar suburb". It's a town full of houses, woods, not a lot of commercial activity, but like Brookline/Newton it's directly influenced by the city of Boston itself.

I also disagree about Milton being the 7th nicest town. Take the rankings with a grain of salt. If you read the methodology that US News, Forbes, BW etc use, you would know exactly what I mean.
Milton has nice sections, but I would be concerned about the potential for spillover of crime from Mattapan. Although crime can happen anywhere, I would be cautious about living close to one of the areas that leads the city in crime.
Milton still has great schools, a great commercial district and is very convenient to Boston, so there are definite positives.

I like Milton overall. I was just in a neighborhood the other night that was pretty close to Mattapan, and you'd never know it. Lots of nice homes.

Milton is a very nice Boston suburb, consisting of mostly single family homes and very limited commercial property. The schools are very good, and the town recently spent a lot of money on new schools throughout the town.
That being said, the least desirable area of Milton is the area adjacent to Mattapan, a rough section of Boston. That is probably why you may find an attractive bargain on a home in Milton due to its proximity to Mattapan. I'd scout out the area before making a decision.

Milton is a decent suburb of Boston. Just far enough away, but not a big deal to get into downtown Boston either. Some very nice upscale areas too. Def not a troubled town or a bad place to live, even though it's awful close to Mattapan.
