Hello, first post - looking for areas with homes priced 350-400K range. Commuting via MBTA into Cambridge, no more than 40 minutes. Re-locating from North Shore, Salem area, looking to buy south of Boston.

Good "town" feel, low crime, strong community. Anyone have information on areas like Rockland, Whitman, Abington? Would love to get into Hingham, but a little pricey. Loved everything about Hingham though...

Is there a "cheaper" Hingham around, haha. Thanks in advance.

I don't think in terms of beauty and history, no. That's one main reason Hingham is so expensive.
Otherwise, there are people on this board that know a lot more about the South Shore area than I do. I'm sure you can find something quasi-sorta Hingham-like.

I grew up in Hanover and it is a lovely town. It is convenient to the highway, has plenty of shopping, a pretty town center, good schools, and housing that is a little less than Hingham. It's not as cheap as the other towns you mentioned, but it's a nice middle ground.

Just my 2 cents. HTH

I think Hingham is great too. I also agree that Hanover is a lovely town with a lot of professionals like teachers, police etc. Another town I like is Norwell, not as pricey as Hingham but more so than Hanover. Scituate is a lovely town on the water and has a good school system. There are pricey neighborhoods, but they also have some more affordable areas. The train is also in Scituate.

There are some really nice areas of Braintree and Weymouth. (I grew up in Braintree and now live here again!)

Great schools, nice neighborhoods, lots to do.

Hingham is expensive, the closest thing for you if you like hingham would probably be Scituate, but if you don't need water Hanover is great and very good schools

I'm sorry but Braintree and Weymouth aren't "nice" towns. You need to go further down route 3 to find the nicer towns - i.e. Hanover, Norwell, Hingham, Duxbury, Scituate, Cohasset.

You don't want to live in Abington, Rockland or Whitman. Not nice towns! If you need a less expensive town that is close to the commuter rail, try Pembroke. Hanover and Marshfield are nicer but they are a lot pricier than Abington, Rockland, Whitman, and Pembroke.

What's wrong with Braintree and Weymouth?
