Default Thinking of returning to MA from AZ

I'm seriously considering moving back to MA from AZ. I'm really burned out on the excessive heat of the desert and miss the seasons of MA. I went to middle/high school on the South Shore specifically Scituate. Have family and old friends living there still, and have asked for info from them, but they're either way too busy or haven't gotten around to it yet. Need some help with current info on the area.

Looking for monthly rental costs annually, definitely not interested in 'winter' rentals. When I get back there, I want my feet firmly planted, please. Considering Hanover, Marshfield, North Pembroke, Rtes.139-53 area. Have 1 horse and 4 cats to move with me, too. Also, electric, gas, water deposits.

Remember Briggs Stables in Hanover from when I was a kid. A website is available, but no costs were mentioned for boarding. Does anyone know, is it a decent place to board a horse or should I look for someplace else? I'd be interest in being in touch 'personally' with anyone who has horses and might have room for another four legged animal.

I saw an old thread on exise taxes/sales taxes for changing tags over to MA from out of state. Now have an idea what I will need to do to make that happen for my vehicle(s).

I know the economy is bad most every where, it's definitely bad in AZ. I have a Class A CDL and would like to find dump truck work. It's what I do in AZ when we work out here. I've been trucking for 14 years, and done my share of over-the-road, regional and local, it's not my thing anymore. I really like dirt work. If not dirt trucking, then I have other skills, of the office variety, but as I just mentioned I've been trucking for 14 years, so those skills are really rusty. What can I expect from the job market there, now, in the not too distant future, or 30 months from now? Don't mind travelling to work if the MBTA is close to where I end up living.

Chances are it's going to be a while before I can split from AZ. I'd like to have this current info. It helps to have those costs now to be able to add them to my travel expenses. Project ahead if you will.

Any assistance anyone can give me will be much appreciated. Thanks.

ScituateAl is on a distinguished road
Welcome! A quick scan on the boston craigslist list for apartments in Scituate came up with 37 listings with a good number of apartments coming in at $1000-$1400/mo. Marshfield came in with some $850 places, but mostly $1000-1200. I thinking checking craigslist is good to see what's out there as well as posting what you want - and having people find you.

As for utilities, "it depends" as they say.Electric rates are supposed to be coming down - so perhaps on the order of $75/mo. Our smallish house using oil runs about $1800 for the season (on a 10-pay plan to help break it up). As for water, I don't think I've ever been charged when renting here in MA. Verizon land phone service is $50/mo, basic cable through Comcast is also like $50, and cheap DSL through Verizon is $20.

Sorry - I know nothing about horses/stables & such. Best of luck making the move back (and with getting your horse across the country!). Craigslist, again, may be a good place to post a request for services.

As for jobs, my new favorite site is indeed.com as they compile listings from many other sites. A quick search there also turns up some CDL opportunities in the Boston area.

I'm sure others will chime in...

Thanx for the info....it gets me started anyway....have to say I'm on the disappointed side where rents are concerned...but I should have expected that, I guess. It is more expensive to live there than AZ. Like I said it's been 30 years since I last lived there. Times have changed....

Scituate Al, what do you know about 'The Heritage Days 2010'? Scheduled for early August 2010.... had an email from an old classmate about it...was curious so I thought I'd ask you. Any info will help. Thanx

Heritage Days is an annual event put on by the local chamber of commerce in Scituate. They close down the main street in the harbor (Front Street) and have food, craft vendors, music, etc. The historic society opens up all their sites as well. Crowds have been fairly good and they set up bussing from the high school to the harbor. For us, it seems that not a whole lot changes year-to-year so we're OK missing it every other year.
Scituate Chamber of Commerce, Scituate Massachusetts

Of course there's the annual KofC carnival, the Marshfield fair just wrapped up, and Cohasset is getting in the act with their 2nd annual family day which appears to be put on by their Chamber.

Scituate is a small town and sometimes it does seem a wee bit quiet - but we do put on one of the larger St Patty's day parades in the area (complete with candy tossed to kids)!

As for times a' changing, yes, from what we've heard they certainly have. Scituate has gone a bit upscale and Marshfield may be more what Scituate was like 30 years ago.
