Default Airplane Noise - How Bad Is It Really? (Chelsea, Somerville)

Hi, all.

Have been considering a condo loft to rent in downtown Chelsea. But I read something about terrible airplane noise coming from Logan Airport takeoffs on runway 33L, a new one that was put into service in 2007, I think.

I saw there are lawsuits going from parties in both Somerville in Chelsea regarding the noise. Can anyone who has experience with these areas tell me ...

- How bad is the airplane noise?
- How often do the takeoffs occur?
- When do the takeoffs occur over these areas?

Thanks so much.

Steve

Default ,

As a person with severe OCD regarding plane noise -- both takeoffs and landings, I feel (hear?) your pain.

I don't live in Chelsea or Somerviile, but I'm near Logan and Chelsea often before 5:30 am and even after midnite. Yes, these planes are horrifically loud in parts of
Chelsea, esp. at those hours. Yes, Massport still has a curfew (I believe), but planes regularly takeoff after midnight and before 6 am, but not as frequently as peak times surrounding those hours.

Around the Chelsea produce area is very noisy.

But of course, it all depends on the wind direction. You may not hear planes for days, or it can be 17+ hours per day, as bad as 90-120 seconds between takeoffs.

The South End, Roxbury, JP, West Roxbury are impacted by runway 27; it's bad when winds are west/northwest, most often in colder months. Summertimes they have little plane noise due to runway 27 not being used. In N. Quincy where I now live, planes seem to land most of the day/most days on their path to Southie. Can't get away from them in most areas with 10-15 miles of Logan. Thank goodness I can block out most of the noise from landings with my fan or a/c.

Even Harvard Square, Belmont, Medford and Winchester gets the plane route that Chelsea endures.

As you may know, many people don't get bothered much by plane noise -- at least not by my standards. We seem to be the few who would even know to do this much research before moving.

Just because one doesn't hear plane noise that day in a neighborhood, try coming back at different hours, and different seasons.
